Objective & Overview

The primary objective of the Electrical & Systems Technologist is to ensure the plants Electrical and Process Control System and Sub-Control Systems are maintained and configured to provide safe, reliable service and efficient control. It is also the responsibility of the Electrical & Systems Technologist to maintain the applications and communication that make up the plant's process network. In addition to achieve the set targets for equipment availability / reliability at the lowest optimum and sustainable maintenance cost, in collaboration with all involved departments or sub-departments, following the maintenance guidelines (CIF and MAC) defined by the company.


Responsibilities

 

Health, Safety and Environment:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to communication, improvement and adherence to safety policies on all work environments and with employees, contractors and site visitors.
  • Identify, plan and collaborate with the Environment team for compliance with legislation and policies.
  • Knowledge and support of the cement plant’s Heath, Safety and Environment management system including awareness of the specific responsibilities described in the programs.
  • Ensure that any changes to plant Electrical and Process Control System are verified by Health, Safety and Environment Managers and other departments to ensure that corporate and regulatory requirements are met.


Equipment Availability:

  • Contribute to the reliability of the plant providing a reliable control system which responds to the continually changing control philosophy and provides plant people with the tools to perform their jobs more effectively.
  • Also, provide a continuous evolution of both plant control and IT/OT systems in order to meet future requirements.
  • Maintain CEMS system.


Maintenance Work Orders Systems:

  • Conduct Electrical & Systems PMs.
  • Administrate work order system by generating notifications, closing work orders and recording database and trends.
  • Optimize efficiency of completed work orders. Collaborate with planning team to balance the workload for each week of the year.
  • Participate in weekly planning meetings as well as in major shut-down meetings to coordinate jobs with other departments.

 

Techincal Library Documentation:

  • Prepare and update List out Parts for the repair/maintenance.
  • Update Electrical & Systems Drawings.
  • Prepare SOPs and safe work practice documentation.


Budget & Cost Control:

  • Contribute to the plant planning processes (PDP, budget & managing other routine expenses).
  • Implement effective and systematic solutions to achieve budget and to meet or exceed targets.


Continual Improvement:

  • Continually review and evaluate methods, processes, technologies and equipments to optimize the Electrical and Process Control System.
  • Support Electrical & System improvement capex projects planning and execution.


Subcontractors:

  • Plan and coordinate work carried out by third parties. Oversees third party work execution.


Relationship with Others:

  • Reports directly to the Systems Coordinator. 
  • The Electrical & Systems Technologist is in direct contact with the employees of various departments in order to coordinate the activities associated with the plants Process Control System and sub-control systems. Must support Electricians/ Electrical Supervisor with drawing, documentation and technical knowledge base.


Specific Accountabilities:

  • Safety: Daily Huddles, FLRA’s, HI’s, VPC, Near Miss, Safety Inspections, Safety Meetings, Plant Pride.
  • Plant Maintenance KPI’s: Positive impact in Main Equipment KPIs, Maintenance System KPI’s. Maintain CEMS system for more than 96% availability & Reliability.
  • Customer Focus: System troubleshooting and Alarm response to support the production plan. Maintenance Impact in Shipping & Quality KPI’s
  • Financial: Cost compared to budget and third party service cost analysis.
  • Must be able to work Monday to Friday 07:30 – 16:00 Hrs. Available for on call to Electrical and Automation support on afterhours, weekends or holidays.
  • Fill in for Electrical Supervisor/ System Engineer on vacation
  • Must participate in all contractual, legislative or corporately mandated training.

Qualification Profile


Education & Work Experience:

  • Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technologist, or graduate from a similar program or Experience in Electrical & Automation.
  • Certified Electrician in Nova Scotia will be considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in a heavy industry. Cement experience an asset.

 

Knowledge and skills:

  • Strong computer software/hardware skills.
  • Instrumentation and Control System experience.
  • Strong communicator (both oral & written).
  • Experience and competency understanding and creating P&ID’s, and other electrical and control drawings using AutoCAD and other drawing software.
  • Experience and competency with Microsoft Office Products.
  • Experience and competency with data analysis using Microsoft Excel and other data analysis software.
  • Highly motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving organizational and personal goals.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment (co-workers, suppliers, etc.)

Physical Demands of the Role

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, grasp, handle, or feel.  
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, climb stairs & ladders, reach with hands and arms, work in awkward situations, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must be trained and comfortable with Working at heights and Confined Spaces
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds. 
  • Employees must perform work outdoors in all weather conditions, and will work around moving mechanical parts and equipment.  Various PPE will include safety boots, reflective clothing, safety glasses, gloves and hard hat.  Additional PPE may be required depending upon tasks.
