Objective: 

 

The Quarry Maintenance Lead is primarily responsible for the maintenance Planning and Inspections on the Quarry Fixed Plant crushing system. This position has direct reports of 2 mechanics and 1 millwright. Reports directly to the Preventative Maintenance Head and indirectly to the Quarry department. There will be additional support from the Plant Maintenance Coordinator, Plant Maintenance Supervisor and Plant pool millwrights in order to get shut down work completed. 

 

In carrying out the duties of this position, a primary objective is to improve the value of all Company assets at the Exshaw Cement plant through increased reliability and lower operating costs while allowing the operation of the equipment to meet production requirements within budget guidelines.
As part of the management team, this position also has a contribution regarding the establishment of plant policies and procedures concerning fixed plant maintenance and general operations. This role has a responsibility to develop effective employee relations, competent subordinates, and collaborative relations between the quarry maintenance employees and other departments. 


Responsibilities:

  • Health, Safety and Environment:
    • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environments/areas and with employees, contractors and site visitors.
    • Identify and plan accordingly for the safety aspects required to ensure safe execution of work e.g. special PPE, lock out, lifting plans, ergonomics, etc.
    • Attend safety meetings when available, and promote the safety culture. 
    • Collaborate with the Environmental team for compliance with laws and policies.
  • Maintenance Management:
    • Provides direct oversight in the scheduling and maintenance of fixed plant equipment at the site.
    • Embraces best practices, processes and tools to ensure maintenance activities are optimized and costs are best in class.
    • Effectively utilizes Lafarge’s maintenance programs to ensure the proper scheduling of activities.
    • Inspect the equipment and Plan all work orders by assigning the required parts, tools, procedures, drawings, and resources to the work.
    • Plan the weekly, monthly, yearly and long-term maintenance plans.
    • Examine and prioritize maintenance activities with team members.
    • Monitors equipment condition by performing both a formal schedule of systematic inspections (PM) of plant equipment, and non-systematic inspections as required by equipment stoppages, daily incidents and pending turnarounds.
    • Following repairs and new installations, the Maintenance Inspector performs follow-up inspections, verifies tolerances in critical issues to assure compliance to accepted standards.
    • Inspect repairs and/or rebuilds being made off-site, and shares responsibility for the quality of specialized items received by Stores. 
    • Is the recognized technical expert in his area of the plant and provides advice and support.
    • Makes technical decisions regarding plant equipment for the Planner, and coaches other maintenance practitioners involved in Inspection or Execution functions.
  • Weekly and daily plan:
    • Schedule the weekly maintenance plan in coordination with production areas and balance the daily workload ensuring full utilization of available in-house resources. 
  • Major outages:
    • Plan maintenance activities for the major/annual outages well in advance by identifying and tracking the status of long lead spares and services.
    • Follows the preparation and consolidation of the shutdown planning (personal, third party’s services, materials, spare parts, equipment, tools, time, critical path) with coordination meetings following the established guidelines and tools.
  • Inventory
    • Generate and follow up purchase requests for materials, spare and wear parts, ensuring just in time delivery.
    • Work closely with stores and purchasing personnel to ensure that inventory levels are maintained to a minimum without compromising plant reliability or the effective completion of mechanical tasks.
  • Quality:
    • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures and standards (ASTM, CSA, MQO, internal targets and limits).
  • Equipment catalogue:
    • Ensure the equipment parts catalog (both in SAP and equipment folders) reflects all plant equipment changes and obtain proper resource for future upgrades so that the catalog continues to be a reliable reference tool for the whole plant
  • Maintenance Performance:
    • Track all statistics related to the Maintenance Department Activities (KPI) i.e: repeat work, PM compliance, machinery failure, etc.
    • Ensure productivity, housekeeping and quality of work standards are maintained within the mechanical maintenance department through sound planning and practices.
  • Maintenance Cost:
    • Plans for cost effective maintenance activities aiming for optimization of resources e.g. people, contractors, spares and equipment downtime. Estimates, tracks and controls the cost of maintenance work orders.
    • Adjust maintenance planning accordingly to remain within budgetary constraints.
  • Environment:
    • Be familiar with and support the plant's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System including being aware of any specific duties outlined in the program.
    • Ensure that any changes to the plant's equipment or design are reviewed with the Environmental Manager and other departments to ensure that any relevant regulatory requirements are identified and met.
  • Communication:
    • Acts as the main point of contact between the maintenance team and operations group to ensure optimum maintenance, reliability and availability of the equipment.
  • Operational Meeting:
    • Represent the Quarry maintenance team in the operational meetings, determine maintenance priorities, plan shutdown period and optimize maintenance during those times.
  • Continual Improvement:
    • Continually review and evaluate methods, processes, tools, equipment to optimize the maintenance function.
    • Follows the performance of the established maintenance performance indicators and implements corrective measures for continuous improvement 
  • Subcontractors:
    • Plan and coordinate work carried out by third parties.
  • Safety leadership:
    • Displays safety leadership by ensuring safe practices by co-workers, employees and contractors in all areas of his responsibility and managing accountability
    • Compliance of all safety policies, procedures and applicable laws.Report on accidents/incidents assuring follow-up as per the Exshaw procedures. 

 

Relationships with Others Jobs: 

  • Reports to the Preventive Maintenance Head
  • Works closely with other plant supervisors and plant coordinators, specifically the Maintenance Department.
  • Works closely with other local support services as required.

 

Qualification Profile:

 

Education & Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in crushing operations 
  • Extensive experience in heavy equipment repair; experience in inspection and welding an asset.
  • Proven experience in mechanical inspections 
  • Proven experience in planning major work and plant shutdowns using computer software 
  • Experience with Computerized Mechanical Maintenance System (SAP)
  •  

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of problem solving techniques (i.e. Pareto Analysis, Root Cause Failure Analysis, etc.)
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong communicator (both oral & written).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to interact with plant personnel.
  • Highly motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving organizational and personal goals.
