Objective & Overview

The Head of Quality Aggregates, will be responsible for establishing clear strategies to deliver exceptional levels of customer product quality, efficiently, economically and to drive the development of the QC function and organization. In addition, the incumbent will guide the Aggregates QC team, in collaboration with the Aggregates Operations team, to optimize the use of our reserves and plant efficiencies, maximizing driver product yield, proposing product innovations and minimizing long inventories 

 

To do this, the Head of Quality Aggregates will ensure that Aggregate products meet the established quality standards in the most efficient manner and provide the regional technical services necessary for the efficient and successful production and marketing of these products. The incumbent will ensure that the market QC Managers understand the reserve type and production setup of plants that they oversee as well as their respective SPI’s. As the Head of the Aggregates Quality Control team in ECAN, the incumbent will be part of the Aggregates Senior Leadership team which will provide first hand exposure to business challenges and opportunities which shall be incorporated into actionable QC strategies and optimization initiatives, supporting our business objectives. She / He will also act as a cross Product Line interface ensuring consistency and compliance in our Quality Control approach and contributing to ECAN wide initiatives.   The Incumbent will be one that provides leadership, coaching and support to Market level Aggregates Quality Managers. In addition, this individual will be responsible for driving the implementation of Minimum Standards Quality modules as well as leading a team of Quality professionals to deliver consistent, high quality products. The incumbent provides personal contribution, support, tools and information necessary to heighten awareness from senior management to front line workers and provides expertise and guidance.

 

Responsibilities

 

Safety:

  • Serve as a role model in the areas of safety, leadership, teamwork, customer focus, and continuous improvement to ensure alignment with the company’s vision and critical success factors.
  • Support local QC teams in the implementation of Lafarge safety policies and compliance with applicable legislation.

 

Strategy & Execution:

  • Develops and drives the execution of the ECAN Aggregates QC Strategy, in Coordination with the Market GM’s, Operations managers and Commercial Managers and in alignment with Group and Country priorities.
  • Develops monthly and annual reports and processes to track implementation and progress. 

 

Quality Control and Assurance:

  • Manage and develop future Quality Control and Process Control programs to achieve industry leadership.
  • Leads the development operational implementation ensuring the link between Strategy and Development, AGG GMs, Operational Managers and Quality Managers.
  • Supports Regional operations and marketing of Aggregates in the region and ensures effective market support for day to day issues.  
  • Ensure Area QC develop and deliver long products & reverses optimization plans to maximize EBITDA and support product needs.
  • Lead the regional expert group to provide troubleshooting assistance to the operations.

 

Plant and Inventory Optimization:

  • Develop and Implement processes and reports to ensure the periodic review of plant production splits and the development of corresponding optimization actions.
  • In addition, ensure the participation of QC Managers on market SPI and Operations managers meetings looking for opportunities to optimize plant setup to match demand, propose alternative products and develop actions to reduce long inventory products. 

 

Leadership:

  • Provide professional and development/coaching to Quality Control resources on a frequent basis and where required clarify roles and responsibilities.  
  • Interact and promote efficient teamwork with the team regarding QC strategies, best practices, savings opportunities, implementation requirements, and resource requirements.
  • Works with Commercial Performance to develop a Market QC team that is able to coach and train market sales people on new products and premium products as well as the implementation of commercialized products.
  • Heightened focus on the professional development of the Aggregates QC team through clear objective setting, continued feedback and robust IDP processes.

 

Process Management & Improvement:  

  • Manage quality operation and internal controls including processes, systems/tools, master data, policies & procedures, training and communication.
  • Drive and lead process improvements based on Internal and industry practices.

 

Reporting & Performance:

  • Ensure the implementation and tracking of performance indicators and achieved results.
  • Provide regular reports and updates to local, regional and/or global governing bodies (councils) as required. 

 

Solutions and Innovation:

  • Participate and assist in the identification, development and sourcing of innovative and sustainable solutions.
  • Supports the execution of Aggregate initiatives across ECAN, ensuring the link between Manufacturing, Commercial and Supply Chain & Logistics functions as well as market GMs, Sales and operations Managers.
  • Work closely with sales and operations for the region in developing robust, well-defined product solutions.
  • Remain apprised of relevant industry, business, technical and functional trends and review their potential applicability to Lafarge operations.
  • Explore and recommend adoption of products or software to assist in innovations. 

 

Association Involvement:  

  • Ensures that Lafarge is well represented by the Lafarge senior team on industry decision making bodies such as the CSA, OSSGA, ORBA, BNQ etc.
  • Promote Lafarge’s interests and communicate in a manner, which upholds Lafarge as a good corporate citizen.
  • Serves in leadership positions on internal and external committees as and when directed.

 

Relationship with Others

  • Reports to the VPGM ECAN Aggregates & Asphalt
  • Actively engage with the Aggregates Manufacturing, Supply Chain & Logistics, Commercial Performance and Land Directors as well as the market General Manager’s and their direct reports to determine product line priorities, objectives and solutions.
  • Actively engages and coordinates with the Head of RMX QC to ensure consistency in the approach to QC
  • As required, will engage with Group performance and innovation functions to contribute in R&D and innovation initiatives

 

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Effective management of Quality Control and Quality Processes to ensure product performance, product cost management and customer satisfaction
  • Develop and maintain technical expertise & knowledge on products and QC management systems within the organization.
  • Responsible to achieve targeted KPI’s (product quality, production consistency, long products, new product support, QA)
  • Internal and external customer satisfaction 

 

Dimensions

  • Three (3) direct reports embedded in operations, 40 indirect reports including hourly & salaried
  • Four (4) Aggregates Markets representing 34 Millions Tons/year of production plus +5Mtns of inbound materials.

 

Qualification Profile

 

Education and work experience:

  • A University degree in a relevant engineering discipline; Master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience within a construction environment Quality Control function 
  • At least 5 years of successful leadership experience in the aggregates industry

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proven experience managing and coordinating Quality Control activities on large projects;
  • Credentials (certificates, licenses, memberships, courses, etc.) Provincial and Territorial professional engineer registration is preferred.
  • Well organized, able to demonstrate a history of strong organizational skill, analytical and problem solving abilities, with good attention to detail
  • Highly developed interpersonal, negotiation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple and changing priorities
