ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail oriented GIS Technician to join our Mining and Reserve Team. This hourly entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity for career development and skill-building in the exciting world of mining and construction.
As a supporting member of the Mining and GIS team, you will play a critical role by assisting in the implementation of new processes and assisting on multiple projects. The GIS Technician employs advanced mapping work in performing a variety of technical and analytical functions related to the use of the Geographic Information System and performs a wide range of duties relative to the assembly of graphic and nongraphic data, the production of maps, reports, and related information, and the development and implementation of GIS procedures and standards.. Training will be provided to implement tasks outside of the candidate’s immediate skill set but the candidate would be expected to be a self-starter and keen on continuous professional development.
The role would be suitable for someone early in their career who wants to gain experience in the Quarrying/Mining & Construction industry. Who has a background in geography, geology / mining / GIS / drafting.
WHAT YOU’LL ACCOMPLISH

GIS/CAD Support – Work under the guidance of senior team members to develop and maintain GIS/CAD databases, maps and drawings.

Real World Tasks & Learning & Development – Expected to make a contribution that will have an impact on the business by utilizing various skill sets and be keen to learn and understand the business.

Data Entry and Analysis – Assist in data entry, digitization and data analysis for mining related projects, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.

Map Creation – Create maps, layouts and spatial data visualization using various GIS/CAD software to support geological, land and environmental projects.

Process Implementation – Work closely with the GIS Specialist to implement and improve processes, optimizing efficiency and accuracy of our Reserves & Resources.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education: Diploma/degree
Additional Education Preferred: Technical Institute in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Field of Study Preferred: Geography, Geology, Mining
Required Work Experience: 0-3 years,
Required Training/Certifications: Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Required Technical Skills: ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online preferred, Knowledge of QGIS, CAD, FME, Python, SQL or Mining Software would be an asset
Travel Requirements: 10-20%

Quality Assurance – Conduct quality checks and validation of data to ensure precision and reliability.

Documentation – Maintain clear and organized documentation of project files.

Collaboration – Work closely with geologists, mine engineers, and land managers to support operations.

Knowledge of Remote Sensing and Surveying Standards would be an asset

Strong attention to detail, problem solving and organization skills

Team oriented and able to work with all levels of the organization

Willing to spend time out in the field getting to know the business first hand

Must be able to multi-task as there will be several projects on the go at one time

Must be a self-starter and capable of working under limited supervision

Knowledge or interest in the mining/quarrying industry is a plus but not required

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking

Some exposure to dust, noise, and extreme temperatures while in the field

Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Holcim approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests
