Decarbonization Manager

Job Purpose

The Decarbonization Manager will lead the implementation of Holcim Egypt's decarbonization roadmap, with primary responsibility for driving measurable CO reduction across the business.

 

The role will translate the company's decarbonization strategy and CO reduction targets into concrete projects, initiatives and operational actions, with a strong focus on Scope 1 emissions from cement manufacturing.

 

The Decarbonization Manager will work closely with Operations, Geocycle, Quality, Commercial, Procurement, Innovation and other functions to identify, prioritize, develop and implement decarbonization initiatives and ensure that targeted CO reductions are actually delivered.

 

The role will combine technical understanding, project management, business case development and strong execution capabilities, ensuring that decarbonization becomes an integrated part of the business rather than a standalone sustainability program.

Key Responsibilities

 

1-Health & Safety:

  • Adhere to and enforce relevant legislation and policies and ensure that highest degree of safety and safe working
  • practices are maintained.
  • Ensure full compliance with Lafarge safety standards and promote safety culture and safe practices among the entire work
  • force.
  • Ensure all BP employees are operating in a safe working environment.
  • Provide monthly reporting and statistics regarding safety performance and incidents.
  • Ensure that all employees and contractors following Health Safety Rules.
  • Conduct VPC and direct other key members in the company to do the same.
  • Identify people with potential to assume broader safety responsibility.
  • Submit the safety figures on monthly basis to the company and discuss areas of improvement.
  • Lead investigations in major safety incidents.
  • Review investigation reports on safety violation incidents and decide on additional actions to be taken.
  • Assume key responsibility for developing H&S improvement plan and relevant action plans.
  • Follow HSIP of the plant and follow the progress.
  • Stopping Unsafe act.
  • Ensure that all employees trained.
  • Attending all safety Meeting
  • Ensure that all employees follow SWI.
  • Achieve Annual Health and safety personal objective.

 

2- Functional:

 

1. Decarbonization Roadmap Implementation

  • Translate Holcim Group and Egypt decarbonization targets into a clear local implementation roadmap.
  • Develop and maintain the CO reduction action plan, including initiatives, targets, milestones, owners and expected CO impact.
  • Identify the key decarbonization levers applicable to the company's cement operations.
  • Prioritize initiatives based on CO reduction potential, technical feasibility, economics, investment requirements and implementation timeline.
  • Establish clear accountability for each decarbonization initiative.
  • Track implementation progress and ensure timely delivery of the roadmap.
  • Proactively identify barriers and develop solutions to accelerate implementation.

 

2. Scope 1 CO Reduction

  • Lead and drive the implementation of initiatives targeting direct emissions from cement manufacturing, including:
  • Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR)
  • Develop and execute the roadmap to increase TSR across cement plants.
  • Work closely with Geocycle to ensure availability, quality and consistency of alternative fuels.
  • Identify technical and operational constraints limiting TSR and develop improvement plans.
  • Evaluate kiln system modifications and operational improvements required to enable higher TSR.
  • Monitor TSR performance and quantify the associated CO reduction.
  • Support the development of business cases for investments required to increase alternative fuel utilization.
  • Clinker Factor Reduction
  • Drive initiatives to reduce clinker factor while maintaining product quality and compliance.
  • Identify opportunities for increasing the use of SCMs and alternative cement constituents.
  • Work with Quality, R&D, Operations and Commercial teams to optimize cement formulations.
  • Assess opportunities related to limestone, calcined clay, slag, fly ash and other suitable SCMs.
  • Develop implementation plans and quantify the CO reduction associated with clinker factor improvements.
  • Support product and standards-related initiatives that enable lower-carbon cement products.
  • Thermal & Process Efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to reduce thermal energy consumption and associated CO emissions.
  • Drive initiatives related to kiln and cooler efficiency, fuel optimization and process performance.
  • Work with plant teams to identify operational improvements and energy-efficiency projects.
  • Ensure that efficiency projects are translated into measurable and verified CO reductions.
  • Renewable & Low-Carbon Energy
  • Identify opportunities to reduce emissions associated with energy consumption.
  • Support initiatives related to renewable electricity, alternative power sources and energy optimization.
  • Evaluate the potential contribution of renewable energy and electricity decarbonization to the company's overall CO roadmap.
  • Other CO Reduction Levers
  • Continuously identify and evaluate emerging decarbonization opportunities, including:
  • Alternative raw materials
  • Alternative fuels
  • SCM development
  • Calcined clay and LC3-type solutions
  • Carbon capture and utilization/storage where relevant
  • Low-carbon cement and concrete solutions
  • Process optimization and digital technologies
  • Renewable energy
  • Waste heat recovery
  • Other emerging technologies and solutions

 

3. Decarbonization Project Development & Execution

  • Identify and develop decarbonization projects from concept through implementation.
  • Prepare project charters, business cases, implementation plans and investment proposals.
  • Quantify expected CO reduction, CAPEX, OPEX, savings and return on investment.
  • Work with Engineering, Operations, Finance and Procurement to develop robust project proposals.
  • Coordinate implementation activities and monitor project milestones.
  • Ensure projects deliver the expected technical and CO performance.
  • Capture lessons learned and replicate successful initiatives across sites.
  • Develop a pipeline of future decarbonization projects.

 

4. CO Performance Management

  • Establish and maintain a detailed CO reduction dashboard.
  • Track Scope 1 CO emissions and key decarbonization KPIs.
  • Monitor performance against annual and long-term CO targets.
  • Quantify the CO impact of individual decarbonization initiatives.
  • Separate structural CO reductions from temporary operational effects where appropriate.
  • Identify performance gaps and develop corrective actions.
  • Provide regular updates to the Sustainability Director and senior management.
  • Ensure consistency between plant-level operational data and reported CO performance.
  • Support Group reporting and decarbonization performance reviews.

 

5. CO Reduction Target & Budget Management

  • Translate the company's CO ambition into annual reduction targets.
  • Develop the annual CO reduction budget / bridge.
  • Establish the expected contribution of each major decarbonization lever.
  • Track actual performance against the CO reduction plan.
  • Identify gaps between the planned and actual CO reduction trajectory.
  • Recommend corrective actions and additional initiatives where required.
  • Ensure that the company maintains a credible pathway toward its long-term decarbonization targets.

 

6. Cross-Functional Mobilization

The Decarbonization Manager will act as a central coordinator across functions to ensure delivery of CO reduction initiatives.

 

7. Technical & Business Case Evaluation

  • Evaluate technical feasibility of proposed decarbonization initiatives.
  • Develop fact-based assessments of CO reduction potential.
  • Quantify CAPEX, OPEX, savings and financial returns.
  • Develop clear business cases that balance CO reduction with operational and financial performance.
  • Challenge assumptions and ensure that proposed CO reductions are realistic and measurable.
  • Support investment decisions by providing robust technical and financial analysis.

 

  • 8. External & Internal Benchmarking
  • Benchmark Holcim Egypt's decarbonization performance against relevant Group operations and industry peers.
  • Identify best practices from Holcim and the wider cement industry.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging decarbonization technologies and solutions.
  • Work with suppliers, technology providers, universities and research organizations where relevant.
  • Evaluate opportunities to pilot new technologies that could accelerate decarbonization.

 

Education, Qualifications & Experience

 

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Chemical, Mechanical, Process, Energy or Environmental Engineering.

Postgraduate qualification in energy, sustainability, decarbonization or business is an advantage.

Experience

 

Technical Skills:

- Strong knowledge of Ready-Mix Concrete operations, batching plants, fleet management, and BP maintenance practices.

- Proven experience managing multiple production sites and operational teams.

- Strong understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance systems.

- Financial acumen with experience in budgeting, cost control, CAPEX planning, and business performance analysis.

- Knowledge of Health, Safety, Environment (HSE), and Quality Management Systems.

- Experience in project management, plant setup, relocation, refurbishment, and commissioning.

- Strong understanding of inventory management, spare parts planning, and store operations.

- Knowledge of transportation and fleet optimization principles.

- Ability to analyze operational KPIs and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

- Familiarity with sustainability, environmental compliance, and operational excellence programs.

- Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP preferred) and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.

- Strong data analysis, reporting, and presentation skills.

- Excellent stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration capabilities.

 

Experience:

  • Typically 8–12+ years of relevant experience, preferably in cement, heavy industry, energy, process industries or a related technical environment.
