Shift Operations Manager
Job Purpose
This role shall set priority for all departments and resources on shift, planning, coordinating and direct in
real time the operation of the plant. The SOM shall align all departments and resources on shift to achieve
the best possible results for Safety, Quality and Production. The SOM will coordinate activities and tasks
through each department supervisor to ensure alignment across all departments on shift. This role will
monitor and communicate plant production status, scrap, machine downtime, labor availability, and the
effect of the total plant operation to the plant management team and department managers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- This position is responsible for aligning all departments across the shift to achieve the optimum
results.
- Assign priorities on shift and facilitate the exchange of information concerning production,
schedules, production equipment downtime, scrap, labor, component downtime and or other
circumstances impacting the facility, production volume, cost, and quality.
- Maintains contact with the production manager, schedulers, department managers, department
supervisors, and technical resources to coordinate the production and scheduling efforts plant
wide.
- Continuously monitors all operations to maintain safe working environment, reduce waste,
reduce defects, and ensure productivity.
- Resolves issues escalated arising requiring coordination across departments.
- Timely, accurate data collection and reporting, analyzing data and making recommendations for
improvements.
- Develop recommendations to increase production, assets capacity and flexibility while
minimizing unnecessary costs and maintaining current quality standards.
- Reports accidents and unsafe work conditions, assisting in investigations as needed.
- Conducts regular department and process audits to ensure standards are met, identifying any off
standard conditions, and coordinating immediate appropriate corrective action with department
supervisor.
- Trains, Coaches, and mentors Supervisors
- Drives assigned continuous improvement activities.
- Works in an industrial environment in ambient temperatures or similar elements for the entirety
of the shift.
- Ensures compliance to all company policies and adherence to all federal and state regulations.
- Assist human resources, labor relations, technical services, and department management as
assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications / Experience
- 3+ years relevant prior management experience
- 6+ years prior supervisory experience in a production driven environment, manufacturing and
union environment preferred
- Effectively utilize Microsoft office tools
- Effectively communicate, lead, and manage diverse work groups. (semi-skilled, skilled, technical,
and professional)
- Proven ability to organize and manage projects, priorities, problem solve, analyze data and
information, developing and implementing solutions.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical instructions, schedules, specifications,
procedures, and regulations.
- Ability to effectively analyze data, present information, write reports, business correspondence,
and articulate complex or technical information.
- Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and deal with a variety of variables
- Flexible to work shifts, overtime and weekends as required, will be required to cover opposing
SOM absence.
- Must be effective problem solver, with excellent people management skills.
- SAP experience preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
