ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Health & Safety Director, responsible for Governance & Programs, to lead and elevate our organization's health and safety framework. This critical role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive health and safety governance structures, policies, and programs across all our operations. You will be instrumental in ensuring regulatory compliance, driving a proactive safety culture, and continuously improving our health and safety performance.

 

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Leadership and Strategy
    • Lead the development and implementation of the company's Health & Safety Management Systems (HSMS) and related standards, aligning with the overall H&S strategy.
    • Act as the primary coordinator for cross-functional teams to ensure H&S accountability across all operational levels.
    • Use H&S data to drive continuous improvement, providing valuable insights through regular analysis and interpretation of key metrics.
    • Lead monthly H&S performance reporting, incorporating both leading and lagging indicators.
    • Represent the H&S team in leadership meetings, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
    • Promote the sharing of H&S knowledge, best practices, and benchmarking across different regions and departments.
    • Partner with key operational leaders with direct involvement in training and evaluating field implementation.
    • Based upon the assignment, the H&S Director will maintain a strong focus on field coaching, cultural transformation, and driving accountability.
  • Compliance and Performance Management
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant local, national, provincial, and international H&S regulations.
    • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to update and implement strategies that reflect current laws and best practices.
    • Establish and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate and communicate safety performance to senior management.
    • Develop and maintain a robust H&S auditing program to evaluate compliance at company sites and track corrective actions to completion.
    • Manage the generation of regular H&S performance reports, providing actionable recommendations for improvement.
    • Based upon the assignment, H&S Director shall oversee incident investigation, H&S training compliance, and corrective action completion at the site level and ensure accountability.
  • Collaboration and Training
    • Work closely with the company safety network and operational leadership to ensure effective implementation of safety initiatives.
    • Coordinate the creation of new H&S standards, guidelines, and best practices, ensuring they are practical and easily adopted by operational teams.
    • Lead internal and external benchmarking exercises to continuously refine H&S processes and programs.
    • Facilitate knowledge transfer and best practice sharing within the organization through both traditional and digital tools.
  • Other Duties as Assigned
    • The H&S Director will be assigned responsibility for a specific corporate function, overseeing H&S systems and processes across the entire organization, or cover multiple operational areas.
    • Actively contribute to the development and execution of strategic H&S initiatives as needed.
    • Manage the company’s H&S reporting tools and ensure consistent, accurate reporting across all product lines.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving H&S regulations and ensure compliance across the organization.
  • Relationships with Other Roles
    • This role is a corporate function covering H&S systems and processes across the entire organization.
    • Direct reports include H&S analysts and project managers.
    • Key stakeholders include the company H&S network, regional management, functional heads, and external regulatory bodies.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.

 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education: Bachelor's degree
Additional Education Preferred: Master's degree
Field of Study Preferred: Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.

Required Work Experience:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of operational experience in H&S or manufacturing/industrial roles, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated success in leading and managing H&S initiatives across large, diverse teams.
  • Strong project management and analytical skills, with experience using data to drive safety performance improvements.
  • In-depth knowledge of international H&S regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, MSHA, ISO 45001, WorkSafe).
  • Proven experience in influencing senior leaders and driving change management.
  • Experience in the cement, aggregates, or construction industries is advantageous.

Required Training/Certifications: Any internationally recognized H&S certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, CSP, CIH) are a plus.

Travel Requirements: Up to 40% travel required is operations operations-centric position, and 10% in a corporate support position.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, multicultural environment.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into actionable insights and strategies.
  • Fluent in English; proficiency in French is a plus.
  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Holcim approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit test.
