Objective:
This position's prime objective is to improve Kilns Performance by developing operators to mastery level of competency in order to maintain kiln stability, quality, and productivity from a technical perspective. This will be accomplished through the operators’ development and training but also by doing a continuous daily performance monitoring, evaluation, assessment and feedback of current kiln operation.
The kiln coach regularly reviews and challenges the operator’s actions in a positive manner with the objective of developing excellence. The responsibilities of this position are primarily the proper operation of the kiln system and the technical mentoring and coaching of control room operators, production supervisors and field operators. This will be accomplished via the following:
Responsibilities
- Safety: Assist in implementing and complying with the Lafarge Safety Program to ensure personnel are working safely by policies and procedures. Ensures all aspects of their role are executed safely and obey safety guidelines on construction sites and Lafarge operations. Pursues a culture of safety that is best in class with an objective of “zero” injuries or incidents. Actively engages with the employees to reinforce safe behaviours, demonstrate an overall commitment to safety through the VPCs, and involve team-based safety and housekeeping activities.
- Training/ Coaching and Mentoring: Training new control room and field operators in kiln operation from a control room and field aspect. This will include implementing the operator development and certification program set out by the regional cement industrial performance group. Accompany and give daily f eedback to operators regarding their actions. Provide training on Kiln Master to new operators. Mentoring of the existing A operators and B operators. Develop/improve kiln management practices and strategies. Provide technical process training to all plant personnel.
- Kilns and Operators Follow up: Reviewing daily trends with operators and discuss on their daily kiln operations and performance gaps vs production targets and define an action plan for every control room Operator. Set up a follow up and analyses tool for reviewing operator incidents. Establish and communicate the actions and recommendations with other operators. Setup and communication of clear targets for kiln operations. Examination and re-evaluation of all existing Kiln Standard Operating procedures. If required, the incumbent will also develop new procedures.
- Kiln Performance/Optimization: Defining and tuning operational control loops related to Kiln operation. Implementation of the KILN MASTER system for automated kilns control. The incumbent will work closely with the Maintenance and Electrical Team, Automation, Process Engineers and laboratory group to make corrective changes and ensure optimum kiln performance.
- Other Responsibilities: Ensure all operators are equal in knowledge and strengths. Ensure all operators use identical operating techniques and clearly understand set points, operating parameters and kiln strategy. Work with automation to fine-tune and implement kiln system control loops. Also to establish appropriate alarm set points and remove redundant and non-essential alarms. Act as kiln start-up champion after annual shutdowns. Perform RCA on all major kiln incidents. Provide support during Operations Troubleshooting to control room and field operators and production supervisors. Champion and implementation of the KILN MASTER control system and ensure their utilisation.

Qualification Profile:
Education & Work Experience:
- University degree in Engineering or equivalent program required for manufacturing technologists or extensive experience in kiln operations and processes.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in cement manufacturing or other industries with kilns.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of sites and appropriate occupational safety techniques.
- Knowledge of RCA.
- Good knowledge of plant production processes and maintenance procedures.
- Previous cement plant experience in production.
- Previous control room operating experience.
