ABOUT THE ROLE
The Operations and Support Manager, Civil of the Vancouver Civil Group has direct responsibility and accountability for the safety and operational performance of the field operations of the GVA Civil division. The Operations and Support Manager, Civil plays a key role in executing safety policies, performance plans, cost savings, KPI targets, manage equipment fleet, and work with staff to ensure projects are completed safely, on budget, with no deficiencies, and for customer satisfaction.
The Operations and Support Manager, Civil is integral in developing and maintaining the capability of the GVA operations organization to increase construction revenue and capability. This includes coaching and mentoring direct reports and continually promoting a culture of agility, collaboration, and empowerment (ACE) enabling continuous improvement.
WHAT YOU’LL ACCOMPLISH
- Ensures safe and healthy working conditions on sites, in full compliance with local health and safety rules and regulations, and conducts monthly safety meetings with field staff.
- Actively monitors project performance, focusing on detailed execution and tracking to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Participates in monthly financial reviews with the team, analyzing the P&L and balance sheet, and engages in monthly job cost review meetings to manage project costs and budgets.
- Drives efforts to reduce working capital by managing holdbacks, accounts receivable, and other financial elements, ensuring timely and accurate submission of required field-level financial documentation.
- Identifies CAPEX opportunities to enhance operational performance and efficiency across projects.
- Serves as the primary contact for customers, fostering strong relationships and generating future project opportunities while actively presenting Lafarge branded products and seeking opportunities for vertical integration.
- Manages field operations for private and civil construction division projects, ensuring best practices, optimized processes, and cost management. Works closely with Project Coordinators and Estimators at all stages of construction.
- Prioritizes environmental responsibility by ensuring compliance with local, provincial, and federal regulations and leading community relations and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
- "Walks the floor" to engage with all levels of the organization, ensuring open communication, addressing concerns, and promoting a collaborative work environment.
- Participates in career and succession planning for key positions and employees within the Civil Construction operations, ensuring the right people are in the right roles.
- Manages hiring and dismissal processes in coordination with HR, ensuring diversity commitments are met and assigning Superintendents and crews based on experience and project needs.
- Directly manages 3-5 Superintendents and 1-40 unionized hourly workers, coordinating multiple-grade crews and ensuring effective team management.
- Maintains strong relationships with owners, engineers, consultants, and the public, while collaborating with all internal departments involved with the project.
- Oversees projects of various sizes and scopes, ensuring Superintendents are assigned to projects as needed, with project locations spanning the Greater Vancouver Regional District and Fraser Valley. These projects can be General Contracted projects or working as a subcontractor for various contractors and/or owners.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education: Post-secondary degree or diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Additional Education Preferred: N/A
Field of Study Preferred: Engineering or related field.
Required Work Experience: Minimum of 10 years of combined management and field experience.
Required Training/Certifications: N/A
Required Technical Skills: Computer proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; Knowledge of Microsoft Project, Bluebeam Revu and B2W software an asset.
Travel Requirements: 0-10%

- Good knowledge of Grading, Concrete Works, Paving, Asphalt and Construction industry and working in unionized environment.

- Ability to read, analyze and interpret plans and specifications, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Ability to effectively present information in writing, and respond to questions from a group of managers, clients, customers and the general public
- Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Holcim approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
