Overview

 

This role will lead the project development and implementation of a large scale Carbon Capture project at the Lafarge Exshaw plant in Alberta, Canada. The role is responsible for the technical and associated organisational development and overall project management to deliver a technically sound, economically feasible & risk balanced project, from pre-FEED development to the FID (final-investment decision) & execution phase. The role will require process engineering proficiency, excellent project management skills, organisational and executive leadership skills. The role will work closely with group and regional resources on project technical development and will be guided by the project steering committee.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Project Leadership:

 

  • Ensure that the project development is fully aligned with the company vision and goals and that group health, safety, environment and other policies are implemented for the project.

  • Build and lead the multi-disciplinary project team, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure alignment and performance

  • Support the development of the project business case, consisting of technical concept and scope, technical descriptions, scenarios, costs, risk analysis, etc.

  • Lead in recruitment of new talent for the project team and support of development of personnel, coaching and mentoring project team members to ensure effective engineering review to project delivery

  • Support the region sustainability group with successful grant applications

  • Responsible for delivery against budget, schedule and regulatory requirements

 

Project Management & Technical Development

 

  • Lead the systematic technical development of the project from concept and pre-FEED phase to final investment decision into execution, ensuring adherence to timelines, budget, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • In achieving this, the position will be working closely with other internal stakeholders on technology selection and technical concept development. The position will also lead activities such as identification and development of design scenarios (trade-off) analysis and project optimization as the project develops from concept through FEED (front-end-engineering design).  Work closely with carbon capture process technology and equipment suppliers (ISBL), engineering integrators (OSBL) and other suppliers and partners.

  • Collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders to design and implement the carbon capture solutions that align with sustainability and other company objectives and requirements.

  • Manage commercial and contract management aspects of project (RFQ’s, contract negotiations, contract disputes, performance guarantees, etc)

  • Develop comprehensive project plans, including technical concept & scope, deliverables, timelines, and resource allocation

  • Comply to requirements to use and master company tools and systems for project management.

  • Manages technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, and regulators) to facilitate appropriate technical decisions, resolve project issues and propose solutions to help meet deadlines and monitor related job costs.

  • Help to shape CCUS engineering development strategy by applying existing, but also defining new business processes, standards and procedures to be leveraged on future group projects.

  • Ability to lead in an environment where change occurs frequently

  • Strong leadership capability, evidenced by success in previous projects, and work in collaborative team environments

 

Stakeholder Management

 

  • Work closely with internal and external government affairs and communications groups to ensure effective external stakeholder management. Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, research institutions, industry partners, and funding organisations, to foster strategic partnerships and ensure successful project implementation.

  • Challenge suppliers and partners on technical solutions and identify opportunities for project optimization focussing on reducing complexity and risk and improving overall project success. Create an environment for creative problem solving and collaboration towards project success.

  • Engage and manage in a professional and effective manner the relationships required with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers, construction and service companies.

  • Prepares and delivers planning and progress reports to management and executive team members and prepares and delivers external presentations as required.

 

Relationships with Other Jobs:

 

  • Ongoing interactions with Industrial Director, Plant manager, project managers, safety, procurement, finance, sustainability, communication functions

 

Travel Requirements:  Up to 25% travel

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Education:  Bachelor's degree holder in Engineering or Construction Management
  • Licences Preferred: Professional Engineer - registered with the APEGA
  • Required Training/Certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification or other project management certification 
  • Required Work Experience: more than 15 years project management experience in heavy industrial / oil and gas environment and track record of successful commercial project management of construction projects in excess of $250million.  Experience in executing contractual agreements and project financing (government grants, capex, etc.), experience with liaising with contractor, subcontractor representatives.  A sound understanding of contractual, commercial and financial functions on major projects.
  • Required Computer and Software Skills:  Drawings software, Microsoft office, Project Management software, SAP a plus.   

 

Other: 

  • Management of project organisation consisting of various engineering disciplines and various internal and external project stakeholders

  • Skills in engineering work, project management, planning and control methods.

  • Familiar with the industrial processes, engineering standards and equipment used in carbon capture installations (fans, pumps, fluid mechanics, process engineering)

  • Proven experience in industrial project management, costing, project control, contractual complaints management and mediation in projects of  >$250m CAD

  • Leadership and managerial abilities: Ability to manage teams. Ability to work with other functional areas: good understanding of the different players and their priorities, excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Solid managerial skills, capable of steering and guiding large and diversified interdisciplinary teams.
