LH Excess Soil Field Technician - Summer Student

Overview
The Excess Soil Field Technician will be responsible for coordinating pit rehabilitation projects, which includes tracking project progress, managing day-to-day operations, upholding environmental and health and safety requirements, and communicating the project status to the Excess Soil team and Aggregate Operations. This role contributes to excellence in safety, production, regulatory compliance, sustainability, customer service and supplier / contractor relationship management.
Note: This is a student position.
Responsibilities
- Safety Culture: Promote safety culture through engagement with site employees, H&S Rep, and subcontractors with an objective of zero safety incidents. Administer, promote and review safety policies, processes and procedures to maintain relevance while ensuring the site meets or exceeds all company and regulatory guidelines.
- Project Coordination: Direct and coordinate rehabilitation project work including but not limited to: overseeing safe unloading of inbound soil, soil sampling, using digital tools to complete inbound manifests, ensuring hauler and contractor compliance with H&S guidelines / policies, preventing safety hazards, enforcing site circulation plans, implementing and enforcing site level controls to prevent environmental impacts, reporting regularly on project costs, reporting on status of operational controls, coordinating with internal resources and directing third party contractors.
- Environmental Excellence: Preventing adverse effects and impacts to the environment by enforcing project site level compliance requirements.
- Administrative Responsibilities: Tracking and controlling projects using digital tools provided.
- Other Projects as Required: From time to time the Excess Soil Field Technician may be tasked with other projects.
Relationship with Others
- Reports to Senior Excess Soil Manager
- Works with the market area Excess Soil Team and participates in daily operational calls.
- Supports and responds to inquiries and requests from plant management and compliance functions including Land, Environment and Health and Safety.
Specific Accountabilities:
- Environmental, Compliance and Sustainability Management
- Oversee safe unloading of inbound soil, making sure that rehabilitation projects run safely, smoothly and in compliance with Lafarge requirements.
- Project-level coordination, monitoring, and control.
- Field level soil sampling.
- Site level safety leadership.
- Effective and professional communication with internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordination of contractors, visitors, and customer at site level.
- Daily, weekly, and monthly project reporting using standardized tools.
Work Environment and Travel
- Location: 14204 Durham Road 30, Stouffville, ON
- This role requires working outside (heat/cold/wet/dry conditions).
- Monday-Friday 7AM-5PM; Saturday on an as needed basis
- Personal protective equipment provided (steel toe boots, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, safety jacket/vest)
Education & Work Experience:
- Knowledge, awareness, or experience of the construction and / or mining industry.
- A diploma in construction, engineering or environmental fields is an asset, but not essential.
- Knowledge of waste management and environmental regulations is an asset, but not essential.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Comfort and capability working outdoors and in industrial (construction or mining) environments.
- Comfort and capability working safely around heavy mobile equipment.
- Excellent people skills able to develop effective working relationships internally and externally.
- Ability to use computers, mobile smart phones and digital applications.
