ABOUT THE ROLE

Westlake Paving, a division of Lafarge, is seeking a dedicated Quality Control Technician (Co-Op) to support our quality control team during the 2025 work term. This hands-on role involves performing process control testing, aggregate sampling, asphalt product analysis, and equipment calibration in both field and lab settings. The position ensures all testing meets ASTM standards and contributes to maintaining lab certification requirements. Reporting to the Quality Control Supervisor, the successful candidate will work alongside a collaborative team to support product integrity and production quality across all operations.

 

WHAT YOU’LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Perform quality control testing of aggregate and asphalt products to ensure compliance with project and industry specifications.

  • Follow proper testing and reporting procedures in accordance with ASTM and Lafarge QA/QC standards.

  • Implement the site’s quality control program, including documentation, inspections, and test protocols.

  • Conduct aggregate sampling and asphalt burn-offs both in the field and at the plant.

  • Calibrate and maintain lab and field testing equipment to ensure accuracy.

  • Record, document, and communicate testing results clearly using both manual logs and computer spreadsheets.

  • Notify production staff of deficiencies and collaborate on corrective action plans.

  • Maintain lab cleanliness and support upkeep of testing areas and equipment.

  • Comply with Lafarge Health, Safety, and Environmental policies as well as WorkSafeBC regulations.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.

 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Education: Post secondary education Enrolled in a technical, civil, or materials-related post-secondary program
Additional Education Preferred:  Enrolled in a technical, civil, or materials-related post-secondary program
Field of Study Preferred: Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Materials, or a related field
Work Experience: No prior industry experience required, but relevant education or previous co-op placements are an asset
Required Training/Certifications: On-the-job training provided; familiarity with ASTM testing standards preferred
Required Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and spreadsheet-based reporting; good mechanical aptitude
Travel Requirements: Some travel to field testing locations may be required

Additional Requirements:

  • Safety-conscious with a strong work ethic and attention to detail

  • Clear verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor/industrial conditions (dust, noise, heat)

  • Physically capable of sitting, standing, walking, and climbing for extended periods

  • Team-oriented with the ability to take initiative and work independently

  • Basic understanding of roadbuilding or construction materials preferred

  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Holcim approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
