Quality Control Manager, Precast

Overview:
We are currently seeking a Quality Control Manager to oversee Lafarge’s Precast Quality Department in our Winnipeg Facility within our Manitoba Saskatchewan Region. Reporting to the General Manager of Precast, as the Quality Control Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that our concrete products meet all required Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Canadian Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) standards and customer specifications and that our precast plants are compliant with our CPCQA certifications. You will be responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of our concrete products and ensuring that they meet or exceed customer expectations. Additionally, you will play a key role in concrete mix designs, sustainability initiatives and the management of our technical team which includes a Quality Control Supervisor, Quality Control Lab Technicians, Quality Control Inspectors comprising a mix of hourly union and hourly non-union employees.
The Quality Control Manager will lead in a manner to ensure Lafarge remains best in class within our industry and also allow us to continuously improve and be on the leading edge of industry innovation.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement quality control procedures and policies for the production process
- Conduct routine inspections and reviews of raw materials inputs, production equipment, and finished products
- Oversee tests on concrete batches to ensure that they meet all required specifications and standards
- Collaborate with internal parties to optimize concrete mix designs for performance, cost and sustainability initiatives
- Evaluate the environmental impact of raw materials and explore opportunities for more sustainable alternatives
- Maintain accurate records of all quality control activities, mix designs, and sustainability initiatives
- Maintain raw material, sales codes and mix design databases, with regards to inventory management, cost tracking, and concrete production
- Collaborate with other departments to address any quality-related issues and develop solutions
- Train and supervise quality control staff, including lab technicians and inspectors
- Ensure that all quality control equipment is properly calibrated and maintained
- Conduct regular audits of the quality control process to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations
- Directly manage a quality control supervisor and manage a unionized workforce of 5 - 10 quality control technicians.
- Act as the Supervising Professional for our various certifications
- Interact with various internal stakeholders such as cement, aggregates, and external admixture and specialty product vendors
- Review customer technical specifications and provide sales and operational team with necessary product recommendations
- Promote strategic sustainable initiatives and new product development to specifiers, architects, engineers, owners, contractors
- Act as a technical liaison with specifiers, submit RFIs, supporting documents, technical memos, mix design review & stamping as necessary throughout bidding and project supply
- Investigate, review and respond to quality complaints, offering technical guidance and best practice memos where required
Qualification Profile:
Education and Technical Knowledge:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering or a related field
- P.Eng., EIT or equivalent Technologist experience is required
- PCI Level 1, 2 and/or 3 training is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of industry standards and regulations, including Canadian Standards Association (CSA), American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), and American Concrete Institute (ACI).
- Knowledge of concrete mix design principles and procedures
- Familiarity with sustainable construction practices and raw material source changes.
Experience and Skill Set:
- At least 5 years of quality control experience in concrete/precast
- Working experience in the operation of a concrete testing laboratory
- Experience managing a quality control team and/or lab
- Proven ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders, such as raw material suppliers and customers.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to review customer technical specifications and provide sales and operational team with necessary product recommendations
